Part of my daily routine before going to bed is to wash and moisturize my feet. Besides being a good thing the foot masseuse told me to do, this brainless ritual allows a pensive moment to recap the day.

Today I spent those 5 minutes pondering a recent conversation with a good friend while driving down the 110 freeway. For me, deep, introspective thoughts take a while to digest and I believe I just had a major bowel movement.

Charles casually mentioned "...given enough time, the right circumstance will happen that causes a person's true character to be revealed."

In the midst of the LA freeway steeplechase, I didn't give much thought to this. Now, I am constantly thinking about these words.

How often have you retroactively looked at a situation (whether good or bad) and were amazed by the timing and circumstance that were so coincidental that divine intervention had to be the conclusion? Perhaps it was that near miss which saved you from a being hit by a car; or that one day when you decided to sleep in late happened to be the busiest day ever.

Furthermore, how about your reactions to these situations? Were you grateful for being spared from a crippling accident? Or were you angry that the day was so busy and it just happened to be the day you were so tired you had to sleep in?

In Chinese, there is a phrase called, "huo-guy." The phrase refers to someone who deserves something. Literally, the words mean "should live." Perhaps the perception that someone "deserves" something is just merely that person living out what is supposed to happen to them. That the thing he deserves is merely an accident at the intersection of time and circumstance.

Next time I will tell you about the meaning of "Busy Dog."
